Almost every “get healthy” and “weight loss” article you read will tell you to skip the drive through and make all of your meals yourself. This is actually very true. But at times the last thing you wish to do is prepare a whole supper for yourself and your family. Once in a while you need to pay a visit to the drive through while you’re on your way home and end the day. There is simply no reason that you shouldn’t be able to do this once in a while and be free of the guilt usually associated with “diet slips”. This is because a lot of the famous fast food restaurants on the market are trying to “healthy up” their choices. Here is how you can find healthy food at the drive through.

Aim for the side dishes. Not so long ago, the only side dish item at a fast food restaurant was French fries. Now more or less all of the well-known fast food places have expanded their menus. There are plenty of salads available now. You might get chili. Baked potatoes can even be purchased. You could get fruit. There are a lot of options that don’t require eating anything deep fried. When you buy your supper through a drive through window, select side dishes instead of just grabbing something premade. You’ll keep calorie and fatty food count lower and save yourself time and effort.

Basic sense states that the best way to lose pounds and get healthy is to ban fast food from your diet entirely. While, for the most part, this is a good idea, if you make smart choices, there is no reason to feel guilty for visiting a drive through one or two times a month. Once in a while, letting someone else cook dinner is just the thing you need. If you choose healthy things, the guilt usually associated with hitting the drive through shouldn’t be so bad.

Steps to make British Restaurant Style Curry Base Gravy:
  1. Dice the garlic and ginger and blend together into a paste with a little water in a blender. (If you don’t have one, skip this step and just add the diced garlic and ginger to the stock pot in the next section)
  2. Take a large pot, add 2 pints of water and add the onions (you can add these whole but I chopped them to fit in the pan easier), carrot, red pepper, chillis and coriander. Also add the salt and vegetable oil here along with the garlic and ginger paste. Cover and cook for 15 minutes, stir and then leave to cook on low heat for 45 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave the stock to cool.

  5. Put the stock gravy back onto the low heat and gradually add and stir in the tomato and spice mixture. Simmer for 20 minutes.
