  2. Take 2 cups Turai (Ridge gourd), chopped

  5. Provide 1-2 green chilies, chopped
  6. Use 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  7. Provide 2 tbsp. oil
  8. Use 1-2 dry red chilies
  9. Prepare 1 tsp. mustard seeds
  10. Take 1 tsp. urad dal (split black gram)
  11. You need 3-4 garlic cloves, chopped
  12. You need 1 sprig curry leaves
  13. Provide pinch asafoetida
  14. Provide 1 tsp. roasted coriander powder
  15. Take 1/2 tsp. roasted cumin powder
  16. Prepare 1/2-1 tsp. red chilli powder
  17. You need to taste salt
  18. Take 1/4 cup tamarind juice
  19. Prepare 1 tsp. coriander leaves to garnish
Instructions to make Beerakaya Pappu:
  1. Pressure cook the soaked lentil with turmeric powder, chopped ridge gourd, onion, tomato, green chilies and 1 & 1/2 cups water for 4-5 whistles. Mash well and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan & temper with mustard seeds & dry red chilies. After it stops spluttering, add the garlic, urad dal, asafoetida & curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds.
  3. Add coriander powder, cumin powder & red chilli powder. Give it a stir.
  4. Add the boiled dal, tamarind & salt. Simmer on a low flame for 2-3 minutes.
  5. When done, switch off the flame and add coriander leaves.
  6. Serve with hot steamed rice.
